School of Food and Chemical Engineering
The School of Food and Chemical Engineering

The forerunner of the School of Food and Chemical Engineering of Beijing Technology and Business University was the department of the No 1 and No 2 Chemical engineering of Beijing Institute of Light Industry, which was established in 1958, and at the beginning of the reestablishing of the Beijing institute of Light Industry it was named as the Department of Chemical Engineering. The Department of Chemical Engineering was renamed as the School of Chemistry and Environmental Engineering in June 1999. The School of Food and Chemical Engineering was built in the January 2011, which contains the Department of Food Science and Engineering, the Department of Biological Engineering, the Department of Applied Chemistry, the Department of Environmental Engineering, and the Staff Office of Chemical Engineering. The School contains five undergraduate majors, including Food Science and Engineering, Food Quality and Safety, Applied Chemistry,Biological Engineering and Environmental Engineering. The school has 3 First Class Discipline in Master’s Degree Conferment Subjects, including Food Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Environment Science and Engineering. And it also has 5 Second Class Discipline in Master’s Degree Conferment Subjects, including Applied Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Biological Engineering, Environmental Science and Food Science. The School also has been granted to confer Master of engineering in the Chemical Engineering. The School owns Beijing Key Laboratory of Flavor Chemistry, Beijing Higher Institution Engineering Research Center of Food Additives and Ingredients, and the National Light Industry Quality Control and Inspection Center for Aloe Products. The School of Food and Chemical Engineering has 1062 undergraduate students, 213 graduate students, 61 faculty members and 49 full-time teachers.
Among the faculty, there are 3 academicians (including 2 interuniversity-joint academicians) of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 14 professors, 16 associate professors, 38 teachers owning Ph. D. degree, 3 Ph. D. supervisors and 25 graduate supervisors. 2 professors have been honored as State Council Expert for Special Allowance. 1 professor has been selected in the “New Century National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project”, and 2 have been selected in the “New Century Beijing Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project”. 1 teacher was elected as “National Excellent Teacher of the University”. 3 teachers were “Beijing Municipal Commission of Education Outstanding (Innovative) Talent of the University”. 10 have won “Beijing Excellent Middle-Aged and Young Model-Teachers”. About 20 faculty members are undertaking the duties of president, vice president, standing councilor, councilor and member in many research institutions, and some are members of editorial board of many academic journals. The teams of fine chemistry industry and ecological management of municipal pollution won the “Beijing Municipal Education Innovative Team of the University”.
The academy disciplines and professional building are impressive. Applied chemistry is one of the key disciplines of Beijing. Food Science & Engineering and Environmental Engineering are key construction disciplines of Beijing. Food Science & Engineering is the specialty construction points of Ministry of Education and Beijing. Applied chemistry is the brand building discipline of Beijing. Biological Engineering is the university key construction professional of BTBU. The teaching team of spice chemistry won the excellent teaching team in Beijing in 2009.
The School has continuously made great achievements in food science researching projects in recent years. “Important Sulfur-Containing Flavor Development”won  second prize of National Technological Invention Award. Three achievements obtained first prize of National S&T Progress Award including “The Synthesis and Application of 2-Methyl-3-mercapto furan and 2-Methyl-3-Furyl Disulfide Flavour”, “The production techniques of natural identical meat flavors”, “The designed synthesis method and application research of the Special characteristic compound”. And the production technique of natural concentrating broth has won the first prize of The Ministry of Education S&T Progress Award in 2010. 20 items of research projects had won awards from the provincial and ministerial S&T Progress level and 10 items had won awards from the provincial and ministerial Outstanding Teaching Achievements level in past few years. More than 800 papers and 40 works have been published and over 50 patent applications have been granted inventive patents. Until to now, the School has undertaken more than 100 projects sponsored by National Science and Technology Supporting Projects, the 973 Program, the 863 Program, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Beijing Municipal Science Foundation, the contract funding has reached over 10 million RMB in total.
School of Food and Chemical Engineering, which is a teaching and research oriented school, insists on the goal of building the talent group, developing the typical subject and strengthening the research. Over the years, the school is focus on both education and scientific research, while promotes the subject construction through research and accelerates the specialty construction through subject construction. Our school makes practice and creativity as a teaching feature, for advancing the teaching reform and improves the education quality. Now more than 5000 qualified advanced professional and technical personnel and management talents have been cultivated for the state. Our school also actively expands the international level of running a school. From 2006, five exchange students majored in food science participated in the “2+2” joint education program which executes between our school and University College Cork in Ireland. Students involve in this program will learn basic curriculum and specialized core courses for 2 years and then learn other professional courses and practical teaching for the last 2 years. Undergraduate diploma will be granted by both universities after the students require all the credits in term of teaching program. In addition, the "3 +1 +1” project, 3-year-undergraduate in our school and 1-year undergraduate plus 1-year graduate in Ireland, is offered. When they completed the requirements of two universities with qualified credits, students will acquire the certificates of undergraduate and bachelor’s degree from both Universities and will be conferred master degree from University College Cork in Ireland.
